Get Ready for Friday as This Bitcoin Price Swing Pattern Gets Tested

    Key Takeaways

    • U.S. economic data has been moving bitcoin price more than Fed decisions themselves.
    • Friday’s CPI report could set the tone for bitcoin ahead of next week’s Fed decision.
    • Thin trading and subdued derivatives activity could amplify bitcoin price volatility.

Friday’s data will test a Coin Metrics finding that employment reports fueled approximately twice the movement of a typical non-event window in the first 30 minutes. Meanwhile, core consumer price index (CPI) releases moved bitcoin price about 1.8 times the usual movement, with a more persistent effect. Bitcoin’s price stayed close to baseline around Federal Reserve (Fed) decisions, as traders had already positioned themselves by the time the Fed announced its rate decision. These findings are based on an analysis of BTC moves around major economic events between January 2025 and September 2026, compared with a normal half-hour trading window.

    Initial Direction for Rate Decision

“Macro releases can set the initial direction of the move, while perpetual futures positioning, funding rates, open interest, and liquidations can influence its magnitude and persistence,” Tanay Ved, senior research associate at Coin Metrics, said. He noted that bitcoin’s initial drop after the Sept. 4 payrolls release showed how quickly a stronger labor report can raise rate-hike expectations and pressure BTC.

Meanwhile, according to Ved, a hotter CPI print could reinforce rate pressure, while a softer reading could provide relief for bitcoin, gold and broader risk appetite.

According to Joe Mazzola, head of trading and derivatives strategist at Charles Schwab, the consensus forecast for annual core CPI, excluding food and energy, is 2.3%, a five-year low.

“Such a figure might give the Fed pause, for lack of a better word,” Mazzola added.

The CPI report is due Friday, Sept. 11, at 8:30 a.m. EDT. A day earlier, on Thursday, the U.S. Producer Price Index is due at 8:30 a.m. EDT, 15 minutes after the European Central Bank announces its rate decision. The consensus is for a 25-basis-point hike. Therefore, the market will be reacting to two major events within roughly 15 minutes.

Key Near-Term Bitcoin Price Volatility Catalysts

Vetle Lunde of K33 Research adds more nuance to the picture. According to the analyst, derivatives activity is now subdued, sentiment is turning more defensive, and thin trading conditions leave bitcoin price more sensitive to macro headlines.

“Friday’s CPI release and next Wednesday’s FOMC [Federal Open Market Committee] are the key near-term volatility catalysts, alongside the September 15 Clarity Act cloture vote,” Lunde concluded, adding that the market is now positioned for the bill to fail in 2026.

The Fed’s rate decision is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 2:00 p.m. EDT. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s comments after the decision might offer more clues for the market and move bitcoin price further. The market now puts the probability of a rate hike at 60%.

Along with its rate decision, the Fed will publish unattributed rate projections from FOMC members, fueling speculation about the most likely rate path for the coming years and whether FOMC members largely agree on how rates should change.

In either case, while bitcoin’s volatility is now at historic lows, Thursday and Friday might add more liveliness to the market if the latest economic data surprises the market, potentially affecting the chances of a Fed rate hike.

At the time of writing, BTC is trading near $79,000, unchanged in a day and up 3% in a week.
